Track time

Start and stop a timer, take a break, and add time you forgot to record.

Before you begin

Time can only be recorded against a workspace project on the Agency plan, and tracking must be enabled for you. See Time tracking overview.

Switch to the workspace first, using the control at the top of the sidebar.

Start a timer on a task

  1. Open a workspace project.
  2. Find the task.
  3. Select its timer control.

The timer starts, and a running indicator appears so you can see it from anywhere in the app.

Start a timer on a project

For work that does not belong to one task:

  1. Open the workspace project.
  2. Start the timer from the project itself.

No task is needed. This is what makes "just start the clock" possible without inventing a placeholder task.

Stop the timer

Select Stop on the running indicator, or on the task or project you started from.

The entry is saved with its start time, end time, and duration.

Take a break

Select the coffee control on the running indicator to go on a break without ending your session, and choose what kind it is:

  • Short break
  • Lunch
  • Other

Select Resume to go back to work.

The classification is one tap on the way in, nothing more. If your workspace has a break policy, the menu shows the allowance next to each kind.

A break keeps your place. The work you have already done is banked the moment you go on break, and the work counter picks up from there when you return, so a morning broken by two coffees still reads as one figure.

While you are on break:

  • The break has its own counter, and your work total is shown beside it, held.
  • Your timer control shows a coffee cup rather than a stop square.
  • Break time is recorded, but it does not count towards the time tracked

against the task.

You can stop from a break directly. There is no need to go back to work first.

If your workspace has a break policy

Owners and Admins can set break allowances for the workspace: how long a short break or lunch should run, and a grace period on top. See Workspace time settings.

When your break reaches its allowance, the timer tells you, and can send you a notification. Past the grace period it shows an overbreak warning with how far over you are, for example "9 minutes over the allowed break".

One timer at a time

You can have one timer running. Starting a new one is how you switch tasks.

Add time you forgot to record

  1. Open Time tracker or My time in the sidebar.
  2. Add a manual entry.
  3. Choose the project, and a task if it applies.
  4. Set the date, the start time, and the duration.
  5. Add a description of the work.
  6. Save.

A manual entry is a normal entry. It is also read-only for members once saved.

Long sessions

An entry over twelve hours is flagged for review rather than being altered. It usually means a timer was left running overnight. Ask an Owner or Admin to correct it.

If your timer stops on its own

A running timer is closed automatically, with the work so far saved, when the entitlement behind it disappears: your Agency plan ends, or an admin turns your tracking off. Nothing already recorded is lost.

If you cannot start a timer

See Can't track time.
