Comments and @mentions
Discuss a task or a whole project, attach a file, react, and pull someone in with @.
There are two places to write something down for the people you work with: on a single task, or in Team Chat, which belongs to the whole project.
| Task comments | Team Chat | |
|---|---|---|
| Where | Inside a task, under its details | The speech bubble in the top bar |
| About | That one task | The project as a whole |
| Who sees it | Anyone who can open the task | Anyone who can open the project |
Team Chat
Open a project and select the speech bubble in the top bar. The thread reads like a chat: your own messages sit on the right, everyone else's on the left, so the same conversation mirrors correctly for each person.
Team Chat needs a project. The Inbox is private to you and has no thread of its own.
Task comments
Open a task and scroll to its comment box.
Task comments are available on workspace tasks, on any personal project you have shared with someone, and on every task if you are on Pro or Agency. On a private personal project with no collaborators and no paid plan, the comment box is not shown.
Mention someone with @
Type @ in either comment box and a list of names appears. It offers the people who can open that project, so anyone you can pick is someone who can actually follow the conversation.
- Keep typing to narrow the list by name or email
- Up and Down to move through it
- Enter or Tab to insert the name
- Esc to dismiss it
The name appears highlighted in the posted comment, and the person is notified.
Sharing a link
Paste a web address into either comment box and it posts as a link. Selecting it opens the page in a new tab, so the thread stays where it is. An email address becomes a link too, and opens in your mail app.
Task descriptions work the same way.
Emoji and reactions
The smiley in the comment box inserts an emoji at your cursor. To react to a comment someone else wrote, use the small smiley beneath it and pick an emoji. Selecting the same emoji again removes your reaction. Hover a reaction to see who left it.
Attach a file
The paperclip attaches one file to a comment. A comment can be nothing but an attachment, so a screenshot needs no caption.
Images, PDFs, Word and Excel documents, and plain text files are accepted.
| Size limit | |
|---|---|
| Team Chat | 3 MB per file |
| Task attachments | 10 MB per task, across all its files |
Images show as a preview you can select to open full size. Everything else shows as a named file to download.
Knowing there is something to read
When a project's Team Chat has moved on without you, a red dot appears on the speech bubble in the top bar. Opening the thread clears it.
Everything also reaches the notification bell. See Notifications.
Deleting a comment
You can delete your own comments, and only your own. Select the × on the comment. The comment and anything attached to it leave the thread.
Removing someone from a project does not remove what they wrote. Their comments stay in the thread.
Who gets notified
| What you did | Who hears about it |
|---|---|
| Posted in Team Chat | Everyone who can open the project |
| @mentioned someone | That person, instead of the above |
| Commented on a task | The people assigned to it, and whoever created it |
You are never notified about your own comment.
